If you’ve been looking for ways to achieve that bright smile you desire, veneers and crowns are two popular cosmetic dentistry treatments to consider. Dentists recommend crowns or veneers based on your teeth’s specific needs. Crowns are essential for covering or replacing damaged teeth, often with potential insurance coverage. On the other hand, veneers are primarily for cosmetic purposes.

While both options are popular in restorative dentistry, you might be wondering about veneer vs. crown. Due to their comprehensive nature, crowns are a bit pricier than veneers. However, there’s a chance that dental insurance might help with crown costs. Read along to learn which choice aligns better with your budget for a smile makeover.

Crowns

Crowns are made to look and feel like real teeth. But they might need more attention from your dentist to make sure they stay in good shape and don’t wear down too quickly. Since they’re not natural like your real teeth, they could need repairs or even a replacement over time. Don’t worry, crowns are built to last for a while.

Veneers

If your teeth are shaped differently, small, or discolored, you can consider getting veneers to enhance your smile. Veneers are thin coverings, usually made of porcelain or resin, placed on your teeth, especially the front ones, to make them look natural and healthy. Your dentist will shape the veneer to match your tooth’s contours after it’s attached.

The Cost of Crowns vs. Veneers

The cost of crowns vs. veneers varies as they are used for different dental issues.

Crowns

If you require a crown, the cost can range from $1,000 to $3,500, depending on the material chosen. Crowns are custom-made in a separate lab and then placed by your dentist. They typically last between 10 and 15 years. The materials for crowns include:

  • Porcelain-infused metal crowns are strong and look good. They usually cost around $1,000 to $1,400 per crown.
  • All-porcelain or all-ceramic crowns resemble natural teeth the most and don’t have metal. They’re a bit thinner, so they might not last as long. These crowns can range from $800 to $3,000 per tooth.
  • Gold crowns are very durable but not as common due to their appearance. They might be recommended if you have a strong bite and need extra support. Gold crowns usually cost about $800 per tooth, sometimes reaching up to $2,000.

Veneers

There are two main types of veneers: porcelain veneers and resin veneers, sometimes called Lumineers. The cost can change depending on these materials, usually falling between $800 and $2,500 per tooth. Porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years, while Lumineers might stay for up to 10 years, based on how well you take care of them and the dentist’s skill in putting them on.
