With its comfort, convenience, and nearly invisible look, it’s no wonder people love Invisalign as an alternative to traditional metal braces. But how much does it cost?

In Los Angeles, the cost of Invisalign ranges from $2200-$6000.

Why’s the range so big? Because every smile is different, so the cost of correcting it is different too. Let’s explore all the factors that affect how much you’ll need to pay (and how hidden costs can drive up the price you see).

How your smile affects the amount you pay

When it comes to correcting smiles, complex cases generally cost more to fix than simple ones. The reason is pretty simple: complex tooth movement takes more time, effort, and materials.

This is why your friend might tell you that they got Invisalign for one price, but you get quoted a much higher price when you go for a consultation. As the dentist checks over your smile, they’ll fit it into one of 3 categories:

Basic Cases

If your smile doesn’t need a lot of correction, or you just need one or two teeth to be adjusted, you’ll probably count as a basic case. Using up to 10 aligners, these cases take 6-12 months to complete, although sometimes they’re quicker.
When you see Invisalign being advertised for under $3000, it’s almost always exclusively for these types of basic cases.

Mild Cases

This is the most common type of Invisalign case, involving moderate movement to correct gaps or crowding and shift teeth forward or backward. If you have a mild case, you can expect it to take one to two years to complete and use around 20 aligners.
In Los Angeles, prices for mild Invisalign cases usually range from $3800 to $5500.

Complex Cases

If a smile has serious problems with tooth spacing, height, and bite alignment, it’s a complex case. Invisalign treatment for these cases takes at least 2 years and 30+ aligners to complete, and often calls for more refinements and follow-up care.
All of that time and effort quickly adds up, so costs for these cases are typically between $5500 and $6000.

The hidden costs of Invisalign

Your smile’s needs can affect the cost of your treatment — but it isn’t the only factor. The amount you pay for Invisalign depends on your smile and the dental office it’s treated at.

Each dental office sets its own prices and billing structure, so a treatment quote that seems more expensive at first might actually be better value once all the costs are added up. This is why it’s so important to know whether the price you’re quoted is all-inclusive or only for Invisalign.

Here’s where those “hidden” costs come from:

Appointments

This includes things like consultations, adjustments, and follow-up care. Just about all dentists offer free Invisalign consultations but charge for other visits, so more visits (scheduled or otherwise) usually means higher costs, too.

Scans and Materials

There are often separate charges for the supporting procedures and materials that you receive during your Invisalign treatment, like X-rays, 3D digital scans, and – of course – your aligners.

Future Maintenance

Your teeth can gradually shift back into their misaligned positions if you don’t wear your nightly retainer. If that happens, you’ll need “refinements” — extra Invisalign aligners that’ll correct your smile (again). These can be another extra charge depending on your dentist.

Avoid those hidden costs.

Comparing the costs of braces and Invisalign

When given the choice, most people prefer to correct their teeth without the visible wires and lifestyle impact that come with braces. But are they paying more for the convenience and discreteness of Invisalign?

These days, the answer is generally “no”.

For simple, mild, and complex cases, the costs for each type of orthodontic treatment are similar, so – in general – there’s no premium for choosing Invisalign instead of braces.

Ways to make Invisalign more affordable

With the way it improves the look and health of your smile, the value of Invisalign is clear (no pun intended). But still, the cost to treat even a basic case is still a healthy chunk of change for a lot of people, so we’ve looked at a couple of ways to make your treatment more affordable.

Benefits & Insurance

Good news — if you have benefits or insurance with dental coverage, it can probably help pay for at least some of the cost of your Invisalign treatment.

Coverage is different between providers (and even individual plans from the same provider), but in most cases it’s around 25% to 50% of the total cost, which can make the treatment much more affordable.

Financing

While financing doesn’t lower your out-of-pocket costs for Invisalign like insurance, it does make the treatment more accessible by spreading out the cost over time. There are even interest-free options so you don’t end up paying more just because you decided to pay in installments.

For example, here at LA Dental Clinic we offer financing plans for Invisalign through Care Credit, Square Installments, and Sunbit.
