A full-arch restoration procedure is a form of teeth replacement, ideal for patients that have suffered from severe tooth loss over the course of their lives. It is a procedure that uses dental implants and screw-retained prostheses to recreate the functionality and appearance of a full mouth of teeth.  A full-arch restoration is intended to restore aesthetics, chewing, and speaking ability in patients who have lost all or most of their teeth. The full-arch restoration is made up of 3 factors, dental implants, prosthetic teeth, and micro screws, to secure the teeth to the dental implants. The result is a stable, full set of teeth.

What are the Benefits of Full-Arch Restorations?

Many patients who are getting a full-arch restoration have tried different methods of tooth replacement in the past. Some patients may have existing dental implants, bridges or dentures. They may even have a combination of these when missing a large number of teeth.  Full-arch restorations are essentially like dental implants for your entire mouth. In patients that have severe tooth loss, this procedure is beneficial and allows them to chew, speak, smile, and experience an improved quality of life. Dental Implants and prosthetics are long-lasting and look and feel like natural teeth. They are stable and trump temporary forms of tooth replacement like dentures.    Full-arches are comfortable and can prevent jaw bone loss in patients who are missing a full mouth of teeth. The weight from the implants and prosthetic teeth keep the jaw bone from deteriorating.  This helps to maintain the overall structure of your face and jaw. In some cases, a patient may need bone grafting before the dental implants can be placed. This generally only occurs in patients who have been missing a large number of teeth for a longer period of time.

How Much Do Full-Arch Restorations Cost in Los Angeles?

The cost of full-arch dental restorations can vary, depending on the patient. However, in general, the cost of full-arch restorations in Los Angeles ranges from $15k-$40k. At LA Dental Clinic, the cost for a full, non-removable, supported implant is $25K. For removable the cost is lower at $1200. As you can see, the price range varies greatly. The patient may require bone grafting or removal of existing teeth, implants or bridges which can affect the cost.  The number of new implants required will also affect the overall cost. Your dentist will be able to provide an accurate quote when you come in for a consultation.

How Long Does a Full-Arch Restoration Take?

The length of the procedure will depend on the amount of work that needs to be done prior to implant placement. Full-arch restorations are sometimes called a “full set of teeth in a day” because once the implants are in, the procedure is fast.    The exact time will depend on the number of dental implants needed, as well as whether or not bone grafting is required. Full-arch restorations typically can be completed in 3-4 sessions with your dentist. (This does not include tooth extractions or bone grafting, which will be longer.)

Full-Arch Placement and Procedure

In the first session, your dentist will take x-rays of your teeth and gums. Impressions will also be taken and your dentist will plan the placement of your implants.    Then, in a separate session, implants can be placed. It will require oral surgery to install the implants. Full-Arch restorations can require as few as 4 dental implants to support the prosthetic teeth.  In the case of a full mouth of tooth replacement, 4 implants would be placed in the upper jaw and 4 would be placed on the lower jaw for a total of 8 implants. You may require up to 6 dental implants per arch but the general number ranges from 4-6 implants.    Once the implants are placed, the prosthetic teeth fit directly on top of the implants. After surgery, temporary prosthetic teeth are placed and the patient can go home. Healing time after implant placement ranges from 10-15 weeks.  Once the implants heal, the prosthetic teeth are securely screwed into place. Follow up appointments can be scheduled to ensure the placement of your new teeth feels comfortable.

Recovery Time After Full-Arch Restorations

Recovering from full-arch restorations is very similar to recovering from dental implant surgery. You may notice swelling while your gums are healing, but the symptoms should not last more than a week.  In the first week after surgery, your gums and jaw will be sensitive and it is best to eat softer foods during this time. After recovery, you should be able to eat and bite into the food you loved prior to tooth loss.

What are Alternative Methods of Tooth Replacement?

There is not a procedure that is as beneficial for replacing a full set of teeth as a full-arch tooth replacement. You can have removable dentures and use these as a stepping stone while you are considering permanent tooth replacement options. If you are not missing a full-mouth of teeth, dental implants and dental bridges may be a better option for you. These procedures can permanently replace single teeth or multiple teeth.
